Madonna - American Life

Every bad thing you can associate with Madonna can probably be traced back to this song. It's not that the song marks a beginning of a decline for Madonna, that happened a lot earlier.

It's more that 'American Life' and the accompanying album highlights of a lot of the processes that culminated in her unfortunate twisting in a leotard, something nobody wanted to see.

It's a maddening mix of incompatible styles, lurching from pop to dance to a hugely misguided attempt at rap. Madonna rapping is just wrong. Like when people put clothes on dogs, it just shouldn't happen.

The video shows Madonna in military outfit educating us on flags of the world. As it turns out they were all the countries she's planning to adopt from.

Again, this is not the beginning of the slide for Madonna but it certainly showcases some of the features that have become more prominent. The desperate clutching to remnants of the days when she was a trend-setter, a leader and not a follower. But even Madonna can't pull off a rap as bad as that.

The lyrics are supposed to be questioning 'American Life', the concept, not the song. There's nothing here beyond the surface, just silly rhetorical questions, bland nonsensical metaphors, terrible meaningless phrases like 'I drive my Mini Cooper and I'm feeling super dooper'.

It goes on and on until it's all too much and you just want to put on 'True Blue' and cry into your pillow.

Hey! I was relatively kind to her there. It gets a lot worse here.
