LIZ SMITH ON MADONNA & BROTHER CHRISTOPHER

After not setting the world on fire with his tepid tell-all book, Madonna's brother, Christopher Ciccone has devolved into a bitchy commentator on his sister's looks, her hair and her young boyfriend, Jesus Luz. Frankly, I find this one of the sadder footnotes in Madonna's career.

I knew Christopher a bit, back in the day when he was close to Madonna. At that time, he was amusing and handsome. When I wrote of his efforts - his stint as an artist, etc. - I always tried to play down his famous sibling. Christopher wanted to be more than just "Madonna's brother." Well, in turning on her, he has cemented what he said he wished to escape.

And what of Madonna? She is back in New York with her four children, recovering from her grueling tour, which grossed $280 million. Madonna prefers Manhattan to any other city. (After all, it's where she became a star.) She is putting on a pound or five, and deep into domestic matters. Her relationship with Jesus? I don't predict marriage, but I can assure those of you who care that this is much more than a casual fling; the pop icon is deeply, seriously happy. Roll your eyes if you want (and I know some of you will!), but I can't begrudge Madonna her happiness. She didn't break up anybody else's home and they are both adults.

Don't be tiresome about the age difference. That's so 20th century.
